Moose Hunting, Black Bear Hunting & Whitetail Deer Hunting Information

Black Bear, Moose & Whitetail Hunt Camp

Rut moose hunts are conducted north of Athabasca, Alberta.

Archery moose and spring black bear hunts are conducted west of Red Deer, Alberta.

You will be staying in a tented camp, in double-walled tents, complete with electric light, bunks and woodstoves for heat. A shower will be available as well. The kitchen will be the central point of the camp and will be run by our accomplished cooking staff, whose skills are second to none! Please let us know if there are any foods you cannot eat or must eat due to dietary reasons. Alcoholic beverages of your own choosing are your responsibility and can be picked up on the way into camp.

Booking Requirements
  • Reservations are required and are confirmed upon receipt of a 50% non-refundable deposit.
  • All deposits are bonded and insured by the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society (APOS)
  • Telephone reservations will be honored for 14 days from the date of call pending receipt of your deposit
  • Cancellation Policy: If we cancel a hunt, deposits will be refunded or applied to another hunt, which ever you choose. Otherwise, there is a 90-day cancellation policy. Hunts cancelled prior to the 90-day limit may have their deposit applied to a hunt or hunter in the same year. Deposits for hunts cancelled within the 90-day limit will not be refunded.
  • Payments: A $500.00 US deposit will get you a spot in camp. The deposit is increased to 50% no later than 31 January of the hunt year, and the balance is payable 30 days prior to the hunt dates for moose, and no later than 1 April for bears. Payment is to be made by wire transfer only to Liege River Outfitting's US account. A hunt information/booking package will be issued when you convey to Liege River Outfitting that you wish to book a hunt. A hunt is not considered booked until the deposit has been received by Liege River Outfitting.
Wildlife Identification Number (W.I.N)
W.I.N is simply a permanent number received in advance, to help speed up the licensing process here in Alberta. Only return clients who have hunted Alberta during the fall of 1998 or later will have this new number already. WIN numbers will be purchased with licenses upon your arrival. There is an application cost of $8.56 CDN.
Transportation

Hunters fly in to Ft. McMurray, Alberta for Spring bear hunts and late moose/whitetail hunts.
Hunters fly into Edmonton for rut moose hunts.

Travel agencies that can be contacted are Uniglobe Travel, at 877-669-3270, and Thunderbird Travel, at 888-223-2117.

Hunters may also drive up to our camp if they wish. We have found that transportation of meat and antlers presents fewer problems if the hunters are transporting it by vehicle rather than taking it on the plane, therefore we recommend that they drive up.
If you prefer to drive, we will send you a map with directions upon booking your hunt.

Firearms Licensing
For hunters who bring their own firearms into Canada, a confirmed Non-Resident Firearm Declaration (form JUS 909 EF) will serve as a licence and registration. You require a Canadian Firearms license in order to bring your firearms into Canada. We can help you with this, but you must give us lots of advance notice. The Non-Resident Firearms Declaration (Form JUS 909 E/F), and it's continuation sheet (Form JUS 910 E/F) must be presented in triplicate, unsigned, to a Canada Customs officer at your first point of entry into Canada. There is a $50.00 CDN fee which is not included in the price of the hunt.
Firearms recommended for your hunt
Black bear hunts:
Black bears can be taken with just about any caliber that you would use for deer. The lighter calibers (.243 - .270) will work fine if you use well-constructed bullets, and the others (.280 - .35) will get the job done in fine fashion. The old .30-06 and 180 grain bullets are pretty hard to beat for this kind of hunting. You must be prepared to shoot in low-light conditions, therefore optics with bright resolution are a must. Archery hunters must use a bow with a minimum draw weight of 40 lbs and a broadhead that is at least one inch in width, in accordance with Alberta hunting regulations. We recommend a minimum draw weight of 50 lbs and a 125 grain broadhead. Shooting distances at the archery stands will be about 20 yds and at the rifle stands will vary from 20-50 yds.
Moose hunts:
Be aware that moose are big animals and your choice of caliber should be leaning towards the heavy end of the scale. The .30-06 with a 180 grain bullet is about the minimum that we like to see in camp. Any of the thirty caliber magnums are good, with 180 - 200 grain bullets, as is the .338 with 210 - 250 grain bullets. The various .35 calibers from the .35 Whelen and up are not out of place here, either. In all cases, use well-constructed bullets and know where your rifle hits at all ranges out to 300 yards, minimum. We can usually get you closer than 300 yards, but if Mr. Right steps out of the woods away down the cutline....it's best to be prepared!
Deer hunts:
Any of the flat-shooting calibers from 25-06 and up will work fine. Use bullets that will expand, but hold together when hitting bone. The Ballistic Silvertip, Hornady SST and Nosler Accubond are all good choices. Know where your bullet point of impact is out to 300 yards. If you have decided to combine moose with your deer hunt, use a caliber towards the larger end of the scale, such as the various 30 caliber magnums. The biggest thing is to be comfortable with what you are shooting, and being able to shoot it accurately.
Personal Clothing & Equipment
Black Bear Hunts
Although it will be the springtime during your hunt, the evenings will still get quite cool. You should bring enough clothing so that you can dress in layers in order to stay warm during evenings spent on stand and so that you can dress lighter during warmer periods of the day. A set of lightweight polypropylene underwear will fit the bill for those cool evenings. A hooded sweatshirt and a fleece top under your favorite camouflage should have you rigged. A scent lock type suit is a good idea. Ensure you have a stocking cap and a pair of gloves in your daypack, just in case. Good boots with light insulation will be fine and you should bring a pair of rubber boots as well. Rain gear is a good idea, but ensure that it is made of material that will allow you to move quietly, as bears have excellent hearing. A camouflage anti-mosquito suit is a good idea as is unscented bug repellant. You should bring a medium to heavy sleeping bag. You should have a set of binoculars, and although not necessary, a range finder is not a bad idea.
Moose & Whitetail Deer Hunts
The weather is normally cold at this time of year, with low temperatures reaching -20 to -25 Celsius. Daytime temperatures can be quite pleasant, ranging from +5 to -10 Celsius. Medium weight polypropylene underwear will be good enough as your first layer. Bring clothing that you can put on in layers so that you can dress warm for the mornings and evenings, and so that you can adjust your clothing during the day. Any of the Goretex parkas that have a fleece or other soft material laminated to the outside layer will do; the Browning coat is excellent. Bring a pair of heavy winter boots and a pair of insulated boots that you can use for walking. Tall, insulated rubber boots are not a bad idea as some areas will still be wet. A good stocking cap and warm gloves/mitts should come along as well. Bring your binoculars, and a rangefinder if you wish. You should have a daypack for personal items. Bring a medium-heavy to heavy sleeping bag.

A detailed equipment list will be sent out with the hunt booking package once a hunt has been booked.
